One of missionaries in our diocese of Musoma called me the other day, sharing with me his disappointment and disenchantment. He talked for half an hour, complaining that he did so much in his mission, spent so much money, built this and that, brought the Gospel to the people, did this and that...and nobody applauds him, neither bishop, priests, us nor parishioners...
His monologue and agitated voice made me think.
Are we here really for earthly rewards? Did we come as missionaries to look for our own glory? Are we in need for applause to be motivated and satisfied?
Jesus ran always away from people whenever they wanted to applaud him and make him their king. Didn't he tell us in the Gospel: "When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'"(Lk 17:10)
If a missionary wants to be in spotlight and get applauded and praised for his performance, he or she should change the job and become and actor or a singer.
