Afya Bora

I may not have the best health at the moment, but the very first project - submitted by my Foundation Kiabakari to Polish Foreign Ministry under auspices of voluntary / development program 'Polish Aid' - titled 'Afya Bora' (Perfect Health) was approved by the ministry for funding! I'm thrilled! And so are all of us in the foundation. A very hard work in last two months paid dividends - the project passed and now our first volunteer coming to Kiabakari in late September for the implementation of this project will participate in training run by the 'Polish Aid' program in Warsaw. I'm positive she will do just great as she is a very smart and talented girl...

So, in one word, the success of our first project means that we as Foundation Kiabakari have become present on the map of Polish government development / aid scheme. And if we fulfill our obligations and run the project professionally and submit implementation report properly and on time, we will build a good reputation for ourselves which is crucial to me as we aim higher and further. It is not a flash and go foundation we have here. We are here to stay and make a difference...

Already our educational adoption program brought great results and some fifty children in our pre-school are in the scheme. What is important - all the money donated by adoption parents go directly to the pre-school and children. We, as foundation staff, do not claim any commission or operational costs. All members of the foundation are volunteers and do not receive any payment of any kind. This is very important piece of information for any prospective donors - our foundation is not a phony organization which aims in reaping benefits. Most of active members are seasoned volunteers and they know how important is to streamline aid and forward it directly to the recipients.

Afta Bora project is all about health education for children in our schools and street kids. We intend to put two hundred children through the thorough medical checkup, the results will map the real situation of their health. Our interest is in seeing how families take care of their children, so after seeing the results and how much lack of mosquito nets and consumption of unsafe water in families contributes to the children's health - our volunteers will run a program of health education and games and plays with children and for the parents aiming at stressing the importance of usage of mosquito nets and boiled safe water.

Then at the end of the program - children will again through the medical checkup. The results will be shown to parents and the second tour of talks and meetings will take place to educate parents on their duties and responsibilities in regards to their children...

The statistics derived from the project will help us prepare other projects for future volunteers and will help other volunteers from other institutions and NGO get on board and continue with helping and educating our children...

All for their afya bora!

What a happy day!
